Wilderness Survival Gear - Water Filtering Systems

Why You Should Consider a Water Purification System For Your Wilderness Survival Gear

Water is needed on a daily basis. Our bodies are of  60 to 70 percent water. Staying properly hydrated is a major issue when in a wilderness survival situation or in urban survival situation. Although you will find numerous water source in a rural area (if you are living in a desert or semi-arid desert) such as lakes and streams, how sure can you be the water is safe to drink? The water may look clean, but your eyes cannot see the bacteria or viruses that could be contained in it. So including a water filtration/purification system in your wilderness survival kit would be a good idea.

Another thing to consider is the amount of water we need to drink throughout the day to stay properly hydrated. The amount of water that we need to take in depends on a number of factors such as air temperature, humidity, altitude and the amount of physical activity we are putting our bodies through. This also varies according to ones weight and physical health. For the average man walking in the mountains this could be up to 4 liters. A supply of water to stay properly hydrated for four days would weight about 35 lbs. Are you going to want to carry that around all day long. Not likely. With this in mind you would want to include in your wilderness survival gear one of the many water filtering systems (remember four days of water would 35 lbs for a man) available in any high tech outdoor equipment store.

There are a number of types of water filtration and purification systems you can purchase to be included in your wilderness survival gear or bug out bag (if you are in an urban survival situation you may need to escape to a wilderness area).

Types of Water Treatment Systems

  • Pump Filters — these systems clean the  water by pumping it through a filter, they don't kill any of the bacteria.
  • Gravity-fed filters — cleanse water by using gravity to push it through a filter.
  • Drops and Tablets — purify water by treating it with a chemical.
  • UV Light — water is purified by treating it with ultraviolet light.

Criteria For Choosing a Water Filtration and/or Purification System

1. Reliability/Effectiveness -  Effectiveness determines what the treatment system actually eliminates. Reliability is  how heavily you can rely on the system you are carrying, and if you are likely to need a backup system.

2. Weight - This becomes a concern if you are forced to walk long distances. If you are putting together an urban survival kit this won't be such a concern as you will likely be staying put until emergency help arrives.

3. Ease of Use - this is determined how fast you can learn to use the system, without a guide to follow. You also need to be concerned about the number of steps required to make the water drinkable and the time it takes to reach that point. Maintenance is also an issue. Of course if you adding chemicals to purify the water the procedure will be quit simple. The only thing to consider is time.

4.  Durability and Number of Uses Before Maintenance

Seven Things You Must Know For Tornado Survival

Most people don't give to much thought about what to do if a tornado is about to hit. Ironically a tornado can occur almost anywhere in the world. The good news for these people the vast major of the most destructive tornadoes occur in a zone known as Tornado Alley. This is an area in the United States which includes Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. For people living in these places tornado survival is on their mind as many have experience on before. They also realize having  a survival plan in place would be a good idea.

Hear are some things you need to know about tornado survival:

1. Highway Overpasses - contrary to popular belief it not safe to hide underneath a highway over pass when a tornado is about to strike. Please have been killed by tornadoes when hiding underneath a highway overpass.

2. Mountains - tornadoes have been seen climbing mountains. A hiker in Sequoia National Park, California photograph one when he was at approximately 11,600 feet. Please CLICK HERE to see the photograph. This illustrates they can strike anywhere, but it is extremely unlikely you will ever experience this. You are more likely to be struck by lightning (being on a mountain top in a rainstorm is very dangerous). But that is another story.

3. City Centers and Office Towers  - Tornadoes have been known to hit the center of lake cities and smash into tall office towers. This happened in Salt Lake City On August 11th, 1999. The 1999 Salt Lake City tornado killed one person and injured 100 others. It was rated as a strong F2 tornado on the Fujita scale. The tornado uprooted trees and destroyed tents setup for the National Outdoor Retailers Association convention causing one person to be killed who was working in the area. 120 houses in the area were severely damaged, 34 were completely destroyed. Over 100 people were injured, some critically. Please  Click Here to read more about this extreme weather event.

4. Warning Signs - They strike quickly with little warning. However there are some warning signs. When a tornado is about to hit you will hear a sound like a freight train or you see a circular cloud rotation.

5. Automobiles - If you are near any parked vehicles get as far away as you can. The tornado can move these vehicles and they will end up becoming projectiles. Do not stay in your car if one is going to hit.

6. Their Appearance Can Be Deceiving - tornadoes can an appear transparent until they pick up dust and debris.

7. NOAA - for more information on tornadoes and tornado safety, please visit the NOAA Storm Prediction Center site.

Tornado survival means you must have a plan and take action immediately if one is near or has any possibility of striking. Have survival blueprint handy to help dealing with the aftermath of one.

Best Regards.

Are you prepared for an extended urban survival situation such as which would occur after a major earthquake or tornado?. Your urban survival kit should contain the stuff for survival. You have to breath. You have to drink water. You have eat. You may have to escape the chaos which results from the disaster situation you are in the middle of. You might need to plan an escape route.
